What Are Loft Stilts?

Loft stilts are purpose-built supports that clip directly onto your roof joists. They create a raised platform above your insulation, so you can lay loft boards without compressing or damaging the insulation beneath.

Without stilts, boards laid directly on insulation flatten it — and flattened insulation loses most of its ability to keep heat in your home. Loft stilts solve this completely. They hold your boards at a fixed height above the insulation, leaving it fully intact and performing at full depth.

Installation requires no cutting, no drilling, and no specialist tools. If you can use a screwdriver, you can fit loft stilts.

Why Use Loft Stilts?

🛡️

Protect Your Insulation

Boards sit above the insulation, not on top of it. Your insulation stays at full depth and continues to perform exactly as it should.

📦

Create Usable Storage

Turn your loft into a proper storage area with a solid, load-bearing platform that can hold boxes, luggage, and seasonal items.

🔧

DIY Friendly

No specialist tools or skills required. Stilts clip onto joists and boards screw down in minutes. A full loft can be boarded in a day.

How to Install Loft Stilts

Fitting loft stilts is a straightforward DIY job. Here is the process in three simple steps:

1

Clip the Stilts

Position each stilt over a joist and press down firmly until it clips into place. Space them according to the manufacturer's guidelines — typically every 400–600mm.

2

Place the Boards

Lay your loft boards across the stilts. They sit flat and stable above the insulation, creating a solid, level platform ready for use.

3

Screw Down the Boards

Fix each board to the stilts using 4.0 × 30mm screws. This locks the platform firmly in place and prevents any movement or creaking.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size loft stilts do I need?
Our loft stilts are designed to work with standard UK insulation depths. Measure your existing insulation before ordering to confirm the stilts will clear it. If you are unsure, contact us and we will help you choose the right product.
How many loft stilts do I need?
As a general rule, you need one stilt per joist crossing point. For standard 400mm joist spacing and 1220 × 300mm boards, a 32-stilt pack covers approximately 3.6m². Use the pack chooser above to estimate the right quantity for your loft.
Can I fit loft stilts myself?
Yes. Loft stilts are designed for DIY installation. They clip onto joists without any cutting or drilling, and boards are fixed with standard screws. Most homeowners complete a full loft boarding job in a single day.
Will loft stilts damage my joists?
No. Loft stilts clip onto joists without penetrating or damaging the timber. They can be removed and repositioned if needed.
Do I need to buy boards separately?
Yes — stilts and boards are sold separately so you can choose the exact quantity of each you need. We recommend our 1220 × 300mm OSB loft boards, which are designed to work with our stilts.
