OSB vs Chipboard for Loft Boarding: Which is Better?

When it comes to boarding a loft, one of the most frequently asked questions is whether to use OSB (Oriented Strand Board) or chipboard. Both materials are widely available, but they perform very differently in a loft environment. This guide compares the two materials across the factors that matter most for loft boarding: strength, moisture resistance, weight, and cost. What is OSB? OSB (Oriented Strand Board) is an engineered wood panel made from compressed strands of wood arranged in layers at right angles to each other. This cross-directional structure gives OSB excellent structural strength and dimensional stability. OSB is manufactured to precise tolerances and is graded for structural use [1]. What is Chipboard? Chipboard (also called particleboard) is made from wood chips, sawdust, and wood shavings bonded together with resin under heat and pressure. It is a lower-cost material widely used in furniture and flooring, but it is not classified as a structural board in the same way as OSB [2]. Moisture Resistance Lofts are exposed to fluctuating temperatures and humidity levels throughout the year. In winter, warm air rising from the living space below meets the cold roof structure, creating condensation. Chipboard absorbs moisture readily, causing it to swell, delaminate, and eventually crumble. OSB is far more resistant to moisture ingress, making it significantly more durable in a loft environment [3]. 2. Structural Load Capacity A boarded loft needs to safely support the weight of stored items — boxes, suitcases, seasonal decorations, and more. OSB is graded as a structural panel (typically OSB/3 or OSB/4 for load-bearing use in humid conditions), meaning it has been independently tested and certified to carry defined loads. Chipboard carries no equivalent structural certification for this application [1]. 3. Screw Holding When fixing boards to loft stilts, the screws must grip firmly and remain secure over time. OSB's cross-layered strand structure provides excellent screw-holding capacity. Chipboard, particularly at the edges, is prone to crumbling around screw holes, which can lead to boards becoming loose over time. 4. Long-Term Value While chipboard costs slightly less per board, its shorter lifespan in a loft environment means you are likely to replace it sooner. OSB, installed correctly with raised stilts to protect it from insulation contact, will last for many years without degradation.
